Every spring, there comes a time when the Andalusian countryside turns into a blaze. Red. Everywhere. Poppies. They appear in April, stay until May, and then vanish as if they were never there. This is their season, and ours, if we are attentive.

Fleetingness

Poppies wait for no one. One week we see green fields; the next—an ocean of red that takes your breath away. When to come: From mid-April. In the evening, such fields at sunset are gold, with backlighting turning each flower into a stained glass window.

Where They Hide

Vega de Granada offers fields between ancient villages such as Atarfe, Santa Fe, and Chauchina. Near Montefrío, where the village balances on a hilltop like a crown, poppies grow below against the backdrop of mountains in the distance. Drive slowly, watch the roadsides, and stop when your heart tells you to.

How to See Them

Crouch down to eye level with the flowers. Perspective changes everything—suddenly you're not looking at a field, you're inside it. Shoot through them, letting the poppies blur in the foreground to frame your subject in red bokeh and create depth. Let the wind decide; don't fight it and embrace the movement as the poppies dance. Morning or evening is best, as the harsh midday sun washes them out. But in the golden hour, they glow as if lit from within, with backlighting revealing every thin vein.

Portraits

People among the poppies become part of the landscape. Walking slowly through the fields with hands touching the flowers, or sitting surrounded, sweetly drowning in red. Lying on your back, looking up at the vast Spanish sky while the poppies frame the world, creates a connection with nature. What to wear? Flowing fabric and movement work best. Be barefoot if the ground allows, to look natural, as if you grew there.

Respect the Wild

Walk carefully, stay on the paths when they exist, and don't trample entire swaths for a photo. Take what the poppies offer, don't demand more. Ask permission if the fields are cultivated; most locals understand the beauty, especially if you are polite.
